Millicent’s Knits & Yarns is Western Maryland’s only yarn shop -- offering city yarns at country prices. Travellers from afar praise Millicent's as one of the top ten yarn shops on the East Coast.  Come and see for yourself!

We take great pride in our selection of yarns, our models made to inspire you, our broad range of patterns, and our high quality instruction. Our knitters are enthusiastic and informed knitters.

At Millicent’s you are our primary focus:

  • You are assisted at all knitting skill levels – we especially love to introduce knitting to new learners.
  • You can select from a wide choice of yarns in many colors.
  • You can choose from a pattern selection for any taste.
  • You can purchase the most recent and most favorite titles from our book section.
  • You can browse to your heart’s content!

We are a two and one-half hour drive from Washington, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, and locally we provide quality yarns for six counties in three states. The cat’s out of the bag – Millicent’s is not to be missed!

Mel Martin and her husband, Dick Soderman, retired from the mountains of Essex Junction, Vermont, to the mountains of Cumberland, Maryland, in 2001. When they moved to the western counties of Maryland and found no yarn shop, it seemed that opening a yarn shop was the thing to do!

A former teacher with a strong art history background, Mel encourages and cheers on beginning and experienced knitters, and softens the blow when the mistakes are whoppers! And she uses her artistic sense to create a unique color experience for all who visit Millicent’s. Dick, a former IBM programmer, has also become the world’s best accountant. You’ll even occasionally see him in the shop – and you might occasionally see him knitting!

We love to have children in the shop.  We have a children's corner with knitted and crocheted toys, plus a number of picture books.  You child is welcomed to play there quietly.  We ask you, please, to keep your child from pulling yarn off the shelves or playing with any of the winding equipment.  Thanks in advance for your cooperation,

We encourage you to purchase one extra skein for your project to ensure consistent dye lot in case you need more yarn. Yarn that has not been used can be returned at any time for store credit.

We cannot accept returned yarn that smells of smoke, grease, perfume, or any other strong odor.  Please keep your yarn purchase in a zip-lock bag if you think you might want to return it.

We happily fill special orders.  However, if we must purchase a whole bag to get the color and yarn you need, you are obligated to buy the whole bag from us (usually 10 skeins).

Needles, patterns and books are not returnable.  Please do not ask us to copy any pattern.  We honor intellectural property laws.

Debit and check cards must be used as debit sales only.

The payment of tuition at registration guarantees a place for you in the class.  Pre-payment is smart!
