January 2006 Workshops & Classes
Workshops:
Felting is fabulous and fun (and not so fiendish after all!)
Carolyn Groves has taken up felting this winter – making bags for all her female relatives and has explored the fun of felting with crochet. Samples of her work here at Millicent’s for you to see. In this workshop Carolyn will be offering an introduction to felting, giving you tips and warning you about the pitfalls. Emphasis will be on timing, sizing, and how to care for your appliance. This is a great intro do the felting classes of this and next month.
Saturday, January 7, 1 – 2:30 Fee $10
Spinning Workshop
Have you always been curious about spinning but not known how to find out about it, much less practice it? Here is your chance! Maureen Pritchard will return with her series of monthly spinning workshops. You can learn to spin on drop spindles (an old-world technique that has become back in vogue – another result of the new knitting craze) or to spin on a treadle spinning wheel. This is a great opportunity to try out spinning. Roving will be provided. Drop spindles are available at a very low cost. Ask Mel about our rent and rent-to-buy programs for wheels.
Sunday, January 8, 2 – 4 Fee $20
Embroidery Workshop
The response to the Karen Phillips-Shwallon’s last workshop was overwhelmingly positive. She will be returning for a series of special workshops, developed just for Millicent’s customers. You will learn various stitches to create a sampler worthy of preserving, a work of art in itself. We highly recommend this workshop to knitters and crocheters, quilters, and other fiber artists. (Take note: Karen is comfortable with driving in snow and claims that she’s never missed a winter workshop. So, unless there is a blizzard . . .)
Saturday, January 21, 10 – 3 Fee $45
Introduction to Rigid Heddle Weaving
Yarn isn’t just for crocheting and knitting. It is also used to a beautiful effect in weaving. Shirley Carnahan is an experienced weaver who has already offered a very successful workshop on triangular loom weaving here at Millicent’s. The Introduction Rigid Heddle Workshop explains how to use a simple, small tabletop working loom. The workshop is in three part, ranging over three Saturdays. Session 1: you will be introduced to your loom, learn to warp and begin a basic weaving sampler. Cotton yarn will be provided for your use. Session 2: You will learn a lace technique on your loom and how to finish a piece. Session 3: You will begin a directed project, an 18” to 24” long two-color table runner that will incorporate a plaid pattern. Ask Mel for information on rental and rent-to buy programs.
Saturday, January 28, February 4 and 11, 10 – 1 Fee $90

Baby, it’s cold outside!
And you want to be warm! In this class you will learn to work on circular and double pointed needles in the round to knit wristlets, fingerless gloves, or knitted hats (toboggans or felted hats). Whatever project you select, you will be learning skills that will take you to a new level in your knitting skills.
Tuesday, January 10, 17, 24, 5:00 – 6:30 Fee $45
Traditional Fillet Crochet
Fillet crochet created with hook and thread was at its heyday 100 years ago as Carolyn Groves will show you in her many original pattern books, but like all things is returning in popularity. It is basically a simple technique, using only a double-crochet stitch, but creates beautiful and complex pictures of flowers and curlicues or geometric patterns. Fillet crochet can be used for table scarves, runners, or placemats, for trim on garments, and for curtain and valences. It is an artful form and deceivingly simple. This is a class for crocheters who like small hooks.
Wednesday, January 11, 18, 25 Fee $45
Wednesday Sweater Nights
Ready to take on a bigger project now that your holiday knitting is done? Millicent’s will be holding an on-going sweater class on Wednesdays nights through March. This is an agenda-free class in which we will support and instruct you as you knit a sweater or vest for a child or adult. This is great for beginning knitters -- if you have taken out Intro to Knitting class, then you are ready to try a basic sweater, or if you have only tried scarves, we can help you use your skills to create a beautiful paneled vest made of simple rectangular pieces. We encourage more experienced knitters to experiment with style (drop shoulder, raglan, circular yoke, Fair Isle, etc. Mel will help you select a pattern that is appropriate for your skill level.
Every Wednesday starting January 10 and continuing through March , 6 – 9 Fee $15/class
