Millicent’s Yarns & More

27 N. Centre Street, Cumberland, MD 21502

Spring Shop Hours:  Tues – Sat, 10 –5 Wed 10 – 8
(except Apr. 18, 25, May 9, June6 when we close at 5)

Spring is sprung, despite the cold temperatures and the snow (Let me be thankful I am not in Vermont --- they have had over 4 FEET of snow since Valentine’s Day!!)  Beautiful spring yarns have come into Millicent’s – yarns of bamboo, soy, cotton, hemp, and silk.  We also have a terrific array of patterns for lighter knitted wear.  Please come in to explore – you’ll be delighted to find what you need for babies through adult sizes. (Stop in to feel the cotton child’s sweater made of Laurel from Schaefer Yarns – feels like silk, looks beautiful!)

Here is some good news:  We will be open the last two weeks in April!

And here is some better news:  We are training our first employee who can be at the shop while I am away.  You may have already met Emilie Gallagher, another treasure who wandered out of the hills of Frostburg to work with me at Millicent’s.  Emilie worked for three years at Main Street Books in Frostburg, but was caught by the knitting bug and jumped at the chance to respond to my need for an employee.  I like her – she’s a hard worker, friendly, and learning very, very fast.  SO, Emilie will be able to keep Millicent’s open with Judith and Tracy supporting her while I am away in Austria with my daughter (or, better said, trying to keep up with her!)  In the meantime, thank you many times over to those who have volunteered with me.

Here are the dates we ARE CLOSED for April through June:

**  Saturday, April 14 and 15 for the Beth Brown-Reinsel workshop

**  Wednesday through Friday, May 9, 10, and 11 for the Continuous Weave workshop

with Carol Leigh Brack-Kaiser of Hillcreek Fiber Studio, Missouri

* * All Sundays through June (we’ll resume our Sunday hours in July)

Mark your calendars – don’t be disappointed by a locked door!

UFOs come to Millicent’s

Classes for May and June will all focus on UFOs – UnFinished Objects.  I have dozens of them, piling up in their red bags, waiting and waiting, sometimes for years!  Everyone who has heard of our UFO classes has responded with a resounding “Good!” – so I can assume that I’m not alone in this pickle.  So, for two months, we will chip away at our UFO’s and hopefully make a good deal of progress!  See our Classes page for times.

Weaving at Millicent’s

The weaving class with Mary Mumper was a great success.  In four classes, people who had never touched a loom before learned to warp the loom, do simple weaving with a variety of yarns and fabrics, plan and create a first “real” project, and then plan for the next!  WOW!

Mary will offer Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom in June and again in August.  See Classes.

Also look for the Continuous Thread Weaving on a Triangular Loom Class later this summer.

Moms and Babies Knitting

Because so many of our knitters have had babies in the last couple of months, we are reinstating our Moms and Babies knitting group on Thursday mornings starting May 17.  No ambulatory babies please!  Meet other new moms.  Take time for yourself and little one – I do the holding!

Knitting with Balls

The response to forming a Men’s Knitting Group is building.   One new knitter asked that we move it from Sunday (hard to be inside on a sunny summer afternoon)  to a weekday evening, so Knitting with Balls will meet the third and fourth Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00:  May 16 and 23, June 20 and 27, July18 and 25, August 22 and 29.

Block of the Month Afghan Club

Because we will be closed on Sundays during the Spring months, the Block of the Month

Afghan Club will be held on the first Wednesday evening of April, May and June.  Try to keep up your momentum – so many of you are so close.

Sock of the Month Club to begin in September

Consensus says that our next monthly club will be a Sock Club.  We’ll produce one sock per month and will have six new pairs of socks by the following fall!  We have brought in several new sock books to inspire – and will have a sock trunk show from Cherry Tree Hill in September.  Think warm feet.

Oh, and speaking of feet – we have brought in a cotton/wool/poly summer sock yarn that knits like a dream and feels like silk.  A mini-sock is hanging as a model.  Another summer sock yarn you will want to try out is TOFUTSIES made of soysilk, wool, and chitin (pulverized crab shell) that makes the yarn antibacterial!

Super Seven-Year-Old Knitter

Allison has knitted large squares for 8 weeks, then spent three weeks sewing and stuffing, and embroidering  -- Voila, a monkey!.  Some feat for a first grader!  CONGRATULATIONS!  And congratulations to all the other six and seven-year-olds in our Kids Knits who are creating scarves, purses, and more!

Brea Bag Knitters

I’ve been promised the handles in May.  They’ve been delayed because my distributor couldn’t get them from their distributor etc etc etc.
