Millicent’s Yarns & More

27 N. Centre Street, Cumberland, MD 21502

Summer Shop Hours:  Tues – Sat, 10 –5 Wed 10 – 7

Remember that we are closed every Sunday in June.  We will again be open on Sundays in July from 1:30 to 4:30 and through the rest of the year until next spring.

Also: please note that our summer Wednesday evening hours are until 7pm, not 8 pm as in the winter.

Brea Bag Knitters

Handles  are in! Come in to see our finished Brea Bag – and yes, we’ll offer the class again in the fall.

NEW!! Shawl Pins!

We have brought in several kinds of handcrafted shawl pins for you.  Some are made of fused glass, others of turned wood, some with polymer class decorative tops to enhance your shawl or scarf, and some large rectangular shawl pins of a high quality plastic.  These alone give you good reasons to knit several shawls this summer!

Summer Kids’ Krafts

We will be holding a craft class in needle felting in July and in weaving in August.  Each class meets once a week for three weeks.  Needlefelting is a way of sculpting wool using a sharp, barbed needle: hence our age-limit of 10 years or older.  Kids will craft a geode, an animal and a tiny troll.  Weaving class is for kids 6 through 16.  Younger kids will start weaving on a cardboard loom to create a rectangle that can be used for a coaster or a doll house rug.  They will then move onto pot holder weaving, when we’ll have a discussion about pattern and color.   Older kids will weave on a triangular loom to create a scarf or kerchief.  Please see specifics on time, etc on our Classes Page.

Summer Teen Knitting

Our summer teen knitting program starts Tuesday, June 19, 3:30to 5:00.  We invite any teen – middle school, high school, or college age – to join us for our weekly gatherings.  If you don’t know how to knit, we’ll teach you.  If you do know how to knit, we’ll help you with new projects and new skills.  The fee is a mere $5.00 and materials.  Kids Knit for younger knitters will resume on Tuesday afternoons after Labor Day.  Teen knitting will be scheduled for Thursdays in the Fall.

Unfinished Objects

We welcome knitters to join us Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings to finish knitting projects.  There’s nothing worse than a red bag filled with half a sweater!  These UFO classes take place June13, 16, 20, 23, 27, and 30.

Weaving at Millicent’s

Our next four-week weaving class on the rigid heddle loom will be held Wednesday evenings in August.  Please join Mary Mumper for this class.  You’ll be amazed what can be woven with our beautiful yarns!

Also: a two week Continuous Thread Weaving on a Triangular, Square and Rectangular Looms will be held July 21 and 28.  This ancient form of weaving allows one to warp the loom while weaving at the same time.  We have found some great patterns, including hats, coats and small bags which we’ll share with you.  It is fun, and cool, and a great summer activity.

Moms and Babies Knitting

Because so many of our knitters have had babies in the last couple of months, we are reinstating our Moms and Babies knitting group every Thursday mornings.  No ambulatory babies please!  Meet other new moms.  Take time for yourself and little one – I do the holding!

Knitting with Balls

The response to forming a Men’s Knitting Group is building.   One new knitter asked that we move it from Sunday (hard to be inside on a sunny summer afternoon)  to a weekday evening, so Knitting with Balls will meet the third and fourth Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00:  July18 and 25, August 22 and 29.  So come on in if it rains, or is too stinking hot to be mowing the lawn, or simply if you are curious about this fiber stuff.  Knitting with balls will continue throughout the year.  And yes, I will give private lessons for men who are shy!

Block of the Month Afghan Club

To be held June 13, July 11, and August 1.  We will have one meeting in September to talk about sewing up the blocks.  Be then, you’ll be ready, right?

Sock of the Month Club to begin in September

Consensus says that our next monthly club will be a Sock Club.  We’ll produce one sock per month and will have six new pairs of socks by the following fall!  We have brought in several new sock books to inspire – and will have a sock trunk show from Cherry Tree Hill in September.  Think warm feet.  We have many new sock yarns for summer, and many patterning sock yarns arriving for fall.  TOFUTIES??  Yes, we have it at Millicent’s!

Socks are great to knit because they are portable, because they are small enough to be completed in a reasonable amount of time, because people love them as gifts, because they are mindless soothing knitting once you have mastered your pattern, because sock yarns are becoming more and more fun to work with, and because there’s something slightly decadent and self-indulgent about pampering your feet with handmade socks!!

DID YOU KNOW THAT BAMBOO YARN IS NATURALLY ANTI-BACTERIAL?  Try that on your feet!

Mel’s visit to the TNNA Yarn Convention in Columbus: A brief report!

Wow!  What a lot of yarn!  We stocked up on many of our favorites, added new colors, and found LOTS of new patterns for your pleasure.  Our big purchase was a POS system, which means we’re going digital.  Bear with us this summer as we set this up.  We will be asking for your address, phone, email address.  We will create a data base for you, our customers, which will let us know what you purchased (this is important, really:  remember the last time you walked in the shop and asked me “Do you remember the red yarn I bought two months ago?” and I went “Huh?”  Well, now I’ll know!)  Even greater things:  you won’t have to wait while we look up costs of yarns in our little card file or write our receipts by hand – it will all be computerized now.  I know, I know, it was quaint the way we wrote everything out – but we are, afterall, in the twenty-first century and, for all intents and purposes, I’ve been running a nineteenth century store.  So, to us all, welcome to modernization!!
