KNITTING AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT FROSTBURG UNIVERSITY

October 23 at 7:30 pm, Ann Hood will speak at the FSU Lane University Center ARMAH and read from her new work The Knitting Circle.  The book is based on Hood’s own life experience of losing her daughter to an unexpected illness and the outlet that knitting provided for her.  “During that time, I learned how to knit,” says Hood.  “Knitting, I believe, saved my life. But it also introduced me to a new world of yarn and colors and textures and of people. Sitting in various knitting circles, I slowly learned that knitting had rescued other women, too.  Knitting gave comfort and even hope through life’s trials.”

Ann Hood has written eight novels, several works of non-fiction, and has had short stories and essays in the New York Times, The Wasington Post, Bon Appetit, and more.  Her awards include the Best American Spiritual Writing Award, a Pushcart Prize, and the Paul Bowles Prize for short fiction.  The reading is free and open to the public.

Millicent’s sells The Knitting Circle if you should like to take a copy to the reading to be signed.

INTERNET HINT FOR KNITTERS

Google Norwegian, Latvian, Estonian mittens to come up with a wealth of color motifs.  These are great to use on mittens or hats!

THE WONDERS OF OUR IN-HOUSE COMPUTER SALES SYSTEM:

1)      You are registered as a Millicent customer (don’t be shy when we ask for address, email, telephone)

2)      Your bonus dollars are automatically collected

3)      You can establish a Wish List in your name for any family and friends looking for gifts for you

4)      Did you forget the name of the yarn you purchased two weeks (or two months ago?)  If you bought it since our system went in, we can look up your purchases and find what you forgot and now need.

5)      You will learn how patient you can be as we get used to the many aspects of doing business in the 21st century instead of the 19th.  Please forgive us as we stumble and bumble this first little while.

MEL’S FAVORITE PATTERN BOOK FOR THIS MONTH

My new favorite book is The Best of Interweave Knits:  Our Favorite Designs from the First Ten Years.

It does what it says: presents the favorite designs from ten years of Interweave Knits.  This in itself is good.  But what I really like about this book are the chapters in-between the patterns.  These are instructional chapters, how-to’s that relate to the patterns and take you beyond the basics.  For instance, did you know that there are seven ways to bind-off?  Other instructional chapters explore decreases, increases, working with two yarns, reading charts, knitting lace, short-rows, seams, and grafting.  They are written succinctly and are accompanied with CLEAR pictorial representations.  I just kept saying Wow, Wow, Wow!

CHARITY KNITTING FOR 2007-2008:  SOCKS

Socks for Soldiers is a charitable group sending wool socks to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Wool is normally associated with cold temperature, but the properties of wool are effective in the desert, too.  Wool wicks away moisture during the day, leaving the feet comfortable, even inside a pair of heavy boots.  Likewise, desert nights can get downright cold, so wool socks in extreme conditions work double-duty.  Socks are knitted in black wool, or white wool that can be dyed, or in any fancy sock yarn for leisure socks.  Sizes can range from women’s small to men’s large.

Accessing their website is easy.  Go to www.yahoo.com.  Click on “Groups” and type in “Socks for Soldiers.”  It is a well-organized group with lots of support.  They have specific guidelines on which yarns and which patterns to use in fingering or sport weight yarns. Socks for Soldiers will continue their efforts in sending not only knitted boot socks, but also leisure socks, beanies and washcloths every week until all of our soldiers come home.  If you don’t have access to the internet, you can ask Mel to see the “Socks for Soldiers” folder in her shop.  There is information on which yarns to use, copies of patterns and other ways we can help.

I HATE TO TALK ABOUT SOCKS AGAIN . . .

But, did you know that your foot is the same size as your forearm, from the bend at the wrist to the bend at your elbow????  The human body never ceases to amaze.

KNITTERS ANONYMOUS

After a lot of thought and idea sharing, the current Knit-In group renamed their social times together “Knitters Anonymous” – Can you guess why???  Are we addicted or what???  Please note that the group also has a time change:  Wednesdays and Fridays, from 12 – 2.  There is no charge for participation.  Knit what you would like – whether you are new to knitting or experienced.  Just come and have fun with us.
