Cardi Mania!  Keep the Thermostat Down!

Autumn and winter knitting should always include a cardigan or two, especially during this time of expensive heating oil and gas and a colder than usual winter predicted by the

Farmer’s Almanac.  Cardigans are fantastic for layering and are snuggly warm when your house temperatures are hovering around 60 in order to save on your budget.  Remember President Carter’s fireside chats?  Dressed in his cardigan, he sent an unspoken but clear message about conservation and practicality.  Mel has just finished a cardigan designed by one of our new pattern designers, CoCoKnits, and knit in super-bulky Burly Spun.  It took a weekend to knit up, several days to block, and another to piece together and voila! The sweater is on show, worn proudly by Joan, our headless wonder.

Mel will be offering a Cardi Mania Class on Tuesday evenings, November  4 – 25, and  encourages you to find a pattern in bulky or super-bulky yarn so that you can wear your cardi as the cold weather descends upon us!

Needle Felting Workshop- Sunday, Nov. 16

What is needle-felting?  It is a simple method of using unspun wool and barbed needles to sculpt three dimensional figurines.  It gives you a chance to be creative and to make whimsical or naturalistic object d’art!  Think elves, Santa, ornaments, even jewelery.  And it’s not any harder than sculpting with clay.

If you have not yet experienced the joys of needle felting, you should try to attend this workshop.  Once again, you will be embraced warmly by Maureen Pritchard (the Barefoot Spinner) at her farm studio just outside of Romney. The consummate needle-felter in our area, Dana Alt, will be teaching with Maureen.  You will need to purchase a needle-felting kit from Millicent’s, and you will be supplied with dyed wool roving. Bring a sandwich and Maureen will supply you with snacks and drinks and a can-do attitude that will have you smiling the whole time you are with her.

The workshop begins at 10 and continues through to 4 in the afternoon.  Fee: $50 plus needlefelting kit ($8.95 *******).  All dyed roving will be supplied.

Stitches East – Nov 6 – 9 at the Baltimore Convention Center

Stitches East, along with Stitches West, Stitches South, etc. etc. is sponsored by XRX, publishers of Knitter’s Magazine plus some of the best books on knitting.  Thousands of knitters gather to take classes, rub shoulders with the “greats” in our area of interest,  go to market to see what other shops are carrying.  Admission to classes is coveted and folk have been registering since June – only a few spots remain open.  However, adventure still awaits you if you want to go:

Fun things to do at Stitches East:

  • get inspired by great demos at Market (entrance fee required)
  • rub elbows with famous knitting authors at a book signing
  • visit the Knit Doctor who is standing by to help you with your knitting problems
  • take a free Learn To Knit class
  • see Knitter’s Magazine and Knit One Below come to life Saturday on the Market Stage
  • stick around on Sunday for a chance to win over $1000 in cash!

Thinking about the Holidays?

Have you begun to think about knitting for friends and family yet?  This is the time to start working like little elves, if you haven’t already begun.  We have a wonderful display of books on our front table to help you out with quick, small gifts.  Look for titles like One Skein Wonders, or Knitting Little Luxuries, or Exquisite Little Knits.  Felting is another quick and easy way to make gifts as you are working on large needles. We have many felting patterns and books, especially our ever popular Pursenalities. New this season Alterknits Felts has some really cute tree ornaments and even a felted Advent’s calendar!   These will all help you make your gifts quickly.

And what will Santa bring YOU?

Did you know that we have a Wish List system here at Millicent’s.  It is so easy to use.  You gather up books and yarns and accessories that you would like Santa to bring to you.  We scan them into your Wish List that is one your very own customer page.  Then, when anyone calls for a gift for you, or when your husband or best friend comes in to get you your Christmas gift, we will have your ideas at hand.  So please do come into the shop to create your wish list for the 2008 Holidays!

Gift Certificate Availability

We have gift certificates at any denomination level.  Some customers have already told us that they are telling their families, “Don’t bother with the other stuff – just give me a gift certificate to Millicent’s.”

Also, many out-of-state relatives order gift certificates for their beloved knitters.  It’s all as easy as a telephone call.  Out-of-state relatives and friends can make a phone purchase with a credit card, and we will do the rest (send the gift certificate to your knitter or to the gift giver) or even hold it at the shop).

Knitting and Crochet Books

Don’t forget about Millicent’s when you want the most recent or the classic book in the fiber arts.  Support your local yarn shop.  We carry books for you.  Thank you.
