FUNDRAISING FOR A HEIFER PROJECT “KNITTING BASKET” On Saturday, April 14 from 10 am to 4 pm, there will be a STITCH-IN fundraiser for  a Heifer International Project “Knitting Basket”: 2 sheep and 2 llama to be presented to a family in a third-world country.  Heifer International Foundation, a non-profit organization, gives people in third-world countries farm animals and the prospect of supporting themselves and their families.

The fundraiser will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church at 211 S. Lee Street, Cumberland. An entrance fee of $15 will go directly toward raising money for the “Knitting Basket”.  A light tea and luncheon will be served.  Knitters, crocheters, weavers, spinners, felters are all invited to bring their current project to work in community.  For more information, please call Kathy Kinsman at 301-777-1407.

Mel will be at the fundraiser for the entire day giving the following workshops:

10:30 am --  It’s Not Grandma’s Knitting Anymore: Knitting for the 21st Century

NEW SUMMER YARNS

Wow! Our summer yarns are coming in and flying out the door as soon as we put them on the shelves! Our most beautiful yarn is a handpainted linen from Claudia Handpaints. One of the more intriguing is Baby Cotton Kapok made of 85% cotton and 15% Kapok. Kapok is a 100% natural fiber that has thermal regulating properties to it and was used as filler in life vests in yesteryear.  We also have a 100% Organic Cotton that uses only vegetable dyes in the coloring process.  Also new is Bebe Cotsoy made of 50% cotton and 50% soy viscose.  Crofter is a cotton-acrylic-wool machine washable blend that knits into a Fair Isle pattern.  Frog Tree Alpaca has sent us a Pima Cotton/Silk blend in beautiful muted colors.  Three new colors in Baby Bamboo are fast disappearing.
