MARYLAND SHEEP AND WOOL SHOW

The first weekend in May – at the Howard County Fair Grounds – it’s crazy, it’s fun, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

CANCELLATION OF STITCH-IN HEIFER PROJECT EVENT

Unfortunately the Heifer International fundraiser is cancelled for this Spring (it was to be held on Saturday, April 11).

SPRING CLASSES

We know, we know – you are in your garden in the spring!  So in May and June we will offer only a few scheduled classes.  HOWEVER, if you or a group of friends are interested in taking a class, come on in to schedule it with us.  We will be happy to offer one-on-one or small group classes at any time.   And then after your garden is in and it gets too hot to be outside and you want a cool comfy place to come, you can look forward to a full schedule of classes beginning in July!

STRING MARKET BAG

String Bags are what Europeans have used for generations when they go go market.  They roll up into a small “wad” for storage but expand and stretch to hold tremendous amount of fruit and veggies.  We have several models now for you to look at – and more are being made!  Our class is Saturday, April 18, 25, and May 2 – just in time for you to be ready for the Farmers’ Market.

FLAT FEET

Not to worry – this is not a medical condition!  Flat Feet, by Conjoined Creations, is a new approach to sock knitting.  Instead of working from a ball of yarn, you work from a flat piece of knitted fabric – or blank - which has been dyed in all sort of crazy ways.  How do you knit it? – you simply unravel as you go!  No more rolling balls of yarn!  Each piece has been dyed uniquely – there’s no telling what the final color work will look like until you actually knit the sock!  Great fun!

LA BOHEME

Fiesta Yarn’s LA BOHEME has been a staple at yarn shops for many years.  We have just brought in four new delicious variegated colors for easy shawl knitting (garter stitch is all you need to know – the beautiful yarn does the color work for you!).  We have also brought in a new sister product called INSIGNIA LA BOHEME in solid mohair blends and wrapped in a lighter rayon thread – really pretty.

MONTHLY KNITTING CLUB, (a.k.a. The Block of the Month Club)

Our Great American Aran Afghan is progressing nicely.  Next meetings are  Sunday, May 3 (2 – 4) and Wednesday, May 6 in the afternoon (2 – 4) and in the evening (5 – 7). Our pattern is on pp. 14 and 15.  A $5 fee is optional.  Please come prepared each month with the number of stitches cast on and the first 6 rows of garter stitch (3 ridges) complete.  Please feel free to join in any month!

KNITTING AS A SOCIAL EQUALIZER

Debi Williamson of Cumberland learned to knit at age 8 while a student at a school for the blind, and then again at local YMCA where she learned that knitting allowed her to have something in common with her sighted peers. Debi has been knitting for well over 40 years now, making gifts for family, infant hats and chemo caps for the local hospital, items to sell at raffles and has won ribbons at the county fair for her knitting!.  Debi searches for patterns on the internet which she scans into Braille and is active on web sites for non-sighted knitters.  Debi wrote in an article for the American Federation for the Blind, “Many productive and happy hours have been spent at my local yarn shop (that’s us at Millicent’s – Mel) with others who like to knit.  I have gone there just to socialize, have taken classes there, have made some of the items used for their display…. When I am preparing to start a new project, I request the assistance of someone in the yarn shop to describe colors, but color is only part of the choice that one has to make when choosing yarn or projects.  The “feel” of the yarn and the texture of the stitch pattern have as much to do with my choice of yarn as do the colors.  Sometimes it is fun just to browse the shelves, touching yarns both in skeins and the finished projects, just to see how the yarns feel when it is “knitted up.”  Debi thinks of knitting as a social equalizer – her knitting gives her the best of both sighted and non-sighted worlds as she has developed knitting friends through many paths.
