SUNDAY SOCIALS REVIEW

Sunday Socials are geared toward Beginner and Intermediate Knitters who have taken our Introduction to Knitting Class at least.  Sunday Socials are more leisurely than the Block of the Month Program for advanced knitters.  Also Sunday Socials are inexpensive,  will teach you skills that you will use for the rest of your knitting life, and will give you a new idea every month for a knitted gift for family and friends.

We had a great  time for our first Sunday Social.  Lots of chatter, lots of fun, lots of good things to eat.  So please join our new knitting circle where you can try out new patterns, new yarns, new skills, and meet new friends to boot!).  We will supply you with a free pattern (patterns in the public domain), a free lesson, and a second free pattern that will allow you to use this newly discovered yarn in another manner.  We ask that you purchase yarn and needles (as needed) at Millicent’s.  Sunday Socials will meet the second Sunday of every month from 1:00 to 4:00 for many, many years, we hope.  On the third Sunday of the month we will supply follow-up help (also from 1:00 – 4:00).

AUGUST SUNDAY SOCIAL

Sunday, August 9, 1:00 – 4:00

In August we will be knitting a two color scarf of diagonal stripes which arcs gently around your neck and shoulders.  The pattern calls it an “Easy Striped Curved Triangular Scarf, -- ugly mouthful! You will be learning skills in increasing and decreasing as you watch your scarf curve softly.  Our yarns are 1) Cascade Sierra, a pima cotton/merino wool blend which costs $9.35 for a solid color (both pima cotton and merino wool are known for their extraordinary softness) and 2) a novelty tape yarn.  We’ve made our model using Berroco Zodiac, a cotton/nylon multicolored tape, costing $8.25, but there are others you can choose from.  You’ll be using a US 11 needle – a straight or circular will do (a US 10.5 will do as well).

THURSDAY AFTERNOON KIDS KNIT

Children ages 6 and up are welcome to Millicent’s on Thursday afternoons at 3:30 to 4:30 learn and increase their skills in knitting and crocheting.

MONTHLY KNITTING CLUB

(a.k.a. The Block of the Month Club)

There is NO Block of the Month Club in August.  This is catch-up time!

A KNITTING THOUGHT – from Dinah Searles

“I tell you, this knitting – I can sit down, pick up my knitting and just feel tension and worries go away.  It focuses my mind.  Instead of thinking several different things, I just focus, which is good for the soul.  It makes me feel peaceful and happy.  It releases the craziness of the world. I enjoy knitting so much that it makes me  want to learn more.  I want to learn everything I can, because I plan to do this until I’m 89!*

And another good thing about knitting is the sisters you meet.  I’ve always felt very comfortable with all the women who gather at Millicent’s – all very kind, sharing people enjoying knitting together.  I can walk in, not know anyone, sit down at the work table, start talking with the group, and end up with friends!  It’s okay if you don’t know a lot or have to ask questions.  There is always someone willing lend a hand, to help and explain.  It’s just comfortable.”

*Editor’s Note:  Dinah Searles is nowhere near 89.

For several months now we have been including knitting thoughts from local knitters in our newsletter.  Whenever you feel so moved to write down a knitting thought of your own, please consider handing it to Mel to put in future newsletters.  This, my friends, is a great tradition being born!  So, who’s next????
