LOCALLY PRODUCED YARNS

An honored policy at Millicent’s Yarns & More is to support local alpaca and sheep farmers, spinners and dyers.  Our newest yarn is from Sideling Hill Alpacas in Artemas, PA.  Alpaca yarns of four natural colors ( a photo on the label shows the particular alpaca that produced that particular yarn) have been mill-spun as a two-play yarn in 250 yard skeins.  Like most locally produced yarns, as opposed to mass-produced yarns, the alpaca hefts a pretty price: $20.00 per skein.  What are you paying for? A lot besides the yarn:  farming in our region that keeps the area rural, jobs (from farm helpers to the shops that sell feed, etc),  local industry (ie small mills that will spin a small amount of fleece for a local farmer), and some pretty happy alpacas!  Pick up a skein:  you’ll be impressed.

So that you don’t forget, our other local yarns and wares are

Aran weight yarns from Highland Farm

Aran weight hand-dyed yarns from The Barefoot Spinner

Hand-dyed striping sock yarn by Kimberly Garver

Hand-dyed striping sock yarn from Gypsyknits Sock It

Glass buttons from Peace Moon Glass

Even a single skein of these yarns makes a special holiday gift!

KNITTING CLASSES FOR 2010

We have been brainstorming our classes for  the 2010 Winter Season, looking at classes for beginners, advanced knitters, and those wanting to advance their skills.  Look for technique classes in “Knitting One Below,” cables, mitered squares, Fair Isle and lace.  Beginners will have  a choice of two or three different intro classes each month.  For those who have taken our Introduction to Knitting, we will have classes in knitting sweaters, knitting and felting bags, and sock classes. Look to our Classes page for detailed information.

DECEMBER  and JANUARY

SUNDAY SOCIALS

Our December Sunday Social pattern is Tudora, found at knitty.com (issue Winter ’07).  If you are able to print it out from home, it would be a help for us.  It asks for an Aran weight yarn and a US size 6 needle. We carry the Debbie Bliss Aran Tweed recommended for this project, and many other Aran weight yarns besides.  Your finished project will need one or two buttons.  Remember that you will receive a free pattern and free instruction, as well as a second pattern to use with this new skill, and you will be eligible for a door prize.  Bring a small snack to share if you feel so moved and join in the fun on Sunday, December 13, 1 - 4.

Our January Sunday Social project is a really cool scarf that we came upon by chance:  an out-of-town customer walked into Millicent’s on the day before Thanksgiving wearing a scarf that stunned us all.  We weren’t sure that it was even hand knit (and asked cautiously so as not to appear too stupid).  Well, it was, and she was kind enough to show us the method, and now we have one on view: a Crossed Dropped-Stitch Scarf.  You’ll love it, I know. And will be able to learn it on the second Sunday of January, Jan. 10, between 1 and 4.  Come learn and party with us!

BLOCK OF THE MONTH CLUB: ARAN AFGHAN

Many, including myself, are all falling behind on our Aran afghan squares – can we blame this on holiday knitting?  I hope so!  Anyhow, we now have only one person coming to our classes. Our last squares are: Jay Campbell, pp. 18 – 19, Dana Hurt, pp. 20 – 21,  Dagmara Berztiss, pp. 48 – 49,  Kathleen T. Carty, pp. 10 – 11,  Susan Rainey, pp. 50 - 51

That should give you 12 squares. Please complete the squares during the months of November, December and January and then assemble your squares using the mattress stitch.  During our February meeting we will be working on the cable edging. Feel free to come in for assistance.

THURSDAY AFTERNOON KIDS KNIT Children ages 6 and up are welcome to Millicent’s on Thursday afternoons at 3:30 to 4:30 to learn and increase their skills in knitting and crocheting.  Parents are asked to pick up children by 4:45 at the latest please!

We at Millicent's Yarns & More wish you

much happiness in the holiday season and

a joyous New Year.

Mel, Dick, Judith, Jola, Geni and Joanna
