MILLICENT’S FACEBOOK  PAGE: A Primer

Have you yet seen the Facebook Page for Millicent’s Yarns & More?  It is a terrific outlet for us to share with you the fun of the yarn world, with bits and pieces of information from Mel. You’ll find

·          a cartoon video about a knitter having a bad day

·          a press release about knitting the royal wedding (complete with dowdy queen, a blazingly handsome younger brother Andrew, and a few corgis thrown in for fun)

·          an article about the House Committee on Un-American Activities (yep, you’ll find knitting there too!)

·          a spot on Urban Grafitti Knitters in England

·         an article on the therapy that knitting provides combat nurses

·         a video on knitters from one local yarn shop who are knitting breast prosthetics for breast cancer survivors

·         a photo display of an art show featuring a live-sized knitted skeleton shared by one of our fans

Is this enough to entice you to want to visit the site?  You will find this and more, as the site grows every couple days with more fun and helpful information about knitting.

Facebook has exploded the communication revolution of the last 60 years.  It is a means of reconnecting with friends from your past (as long as they have a Facebook account too), and keeping up with their activities today.    It is also a way of learning more about your favorite baseball team, movies, books, and yarn shops!  Don’t be afraid of Facebook – YOU determine how much information to put there about yourself, and there is a carefully constructed way of determining who will be your “friend.”  YOU are always in control.

Our Millicent’s Yarns & More business page gives us the opportunity to share “links” to the wide world of knitting that are not possible to share with you in our newsletter.  It also gives you an opportunity to talk back to us about what we have on our page, to answer any polls, or to receive coupons that you can use at Millicent’s. And, of course, we will have discussions about knitting topics and even some videos showing how-to’s about knitting.

HOW TO FIND MILLICENT’S FACEBOOK PAGE

If you have a Facebook account, it is very easy to find the Facebook page for Millicent’s Yarns & More.  Simply go to “search” and type in Millicent’s Yarns & More.  Please “LIKE” us by clicking on the thumb’s up symbol.  You then will have notices of Millicent’s new posts regularly on your Personal Facebook Page.

HOW TO OPEN UP A PERSONAL FACEBOOK ACCOUNT – step by step, easy peasy!

You need to have a computer that can get you on the internet.  Open up your favorite Web browser -- Firefox or Internet Explorer or whatever -- and type in www.facebook.com.  This will take you to the opening page of Facebook.

You will see the following words:  “Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life.  Sign up: It’s free and anyone can join” and a map showing connections around the world.

On this page you will find blanks to type in your first and last name, your email address, a password that you will remember.  The page also asks for Male or Female identification and your birthday.

Hit the “SIGN UP” button.  A new page will come up where you’ll be given a funny word or group of unrelated letters to determine (called a captcha text).  Type that into the blank and hit enter.  THAT’S IT!

HOW TO SET UP A FACEBOOK PROFILE – but only if you wish!

A new page comes up on the screen.  This is where the fun begins.  You can search for contacts on Facebook by supplying your e-mail address and password on the Find Friends page.  Click the “Add as Friend” link next to anyone you want to become friends with.  I’ll be there under “Mel Martin” so be sure to click on me!

After finding a few friends you can set up your profile.  This is where you tell people about yourself – as much or as little as you wish.  Note what high school and/or college you attended and the company you work for.  You can add a photo of yourself if you wish (but this takes some knowledge about getting pictures into your computer’s  Picture File and then transferring them onto Facebook).  Don’t worry if you don’t have a picture – you’ll get instead a “shadow picture” of a male or female head.

You can modify your facebook profile whenever you wish to.

From now on, every time you log into Facebook, your personal page will open by default, automagically.

WHAT DOES “LIKE” MEAN?

Clicking on the “LIKE” button is the same as giving an endorsement, or a token of appreciation, an affirmation.  Are you glad to see Millicent’s on Facebook and approve of the sorts of information we are making available? – then “LIKE” us please.  It’s a way of becoming a fan of Millicent’s Yarns & More.

Clicking on the “Like” button gives you an option to add a comment.  Please comment away!   You’ll find a few comments already on Millicent’s Facebook page.  We ask only that your comments remain within the broad range of knitting topics.

Wonder why there is not a “Dislike” button?  Facebook is a social community.  In order for it to survive, there needs to be positivity in the air (sounds like Millicent’s doesn’t it – so many people come in and tell us how positive and peaceful the atmosphere is in our shop).

LIKE-ing a page means you are “connected” to that page – in our case, you will be connected to Millicent’s Yarns & More.  When you connect to a Page, it will appear on the wall of your Personal Profile page like a letter.  It will also allow you to share the Page or an article or video on the Page with your friends.

THERE IS A small PROBEM:  I AM NOT FRIENDS WITH MY COMPUTER

If you are still struggling with your computer and using it as a very expensive typewriter --let me suggest for local folks, at least, the computer course my husband Dick Soderman teaches for Continuing Education at Allegany College several times every year.  It has brought a lot of people out of the dark ages.  (Not only is this an advertisement for Dick’s classes, it is also a tit-for-tat with Dick – he always brings up Millicent’s website during the class discussion of exploring websites, bless his heart!)

JULY CLASSES AT MILLICENT’S

Introduction to Knitting Classes and Introduction to Crochet classes are free of charge in July and August.  These are the same 4-week classes that are usually offered and will give beginners a solid foundation in basic skills and in pattern reading.  WHY do we offer free introduction classes in the summer?  It is simple.  We want to encourage as many people as possible to learn the basics so that they can begin the real fun when the weather cools and we all are wanting to work with lots of yarn!

Geni will repeat her ever popular 4-week Skills Class For Knitters.

Remember that all classes can be made-up if you are called away by vacation.

Our on-going Sunday groups that meet the first, second and third Sundays of July and August will continue to meet in July and August, but only on a casual basis.  In other words, come in to knit without the formal instruction we usually insert.  Perhaps you have a project underway that has hit a bump or needs moral support to get finished.   Bring it along!  The Cold Hands group and the Sock Sunday group will meet to encourage us all to finish off the second mitten/sock of each pair.  Call it knitting therapy.

SPINNING SOCIAL

Don’t forget our Spinning Social on Saturday, June 25 and on Saturday, July 23 at noon.  This is a great opportunity to join in with our hand-spinning teacher, Sara Greer, to reinforce your spinning skills or to learn hand-spinning for the first time.  We will now be using our Spinning Social time as a “drop-in” and “on-going” class.

FLOUNCE!

Flounce has hit our store big-time.  While Mel worried it might be a fly-by-night kind of thing, it has proven itself to be wildly popular because it is simply so very pretty.  This is ruffles big-time, ruffles for fun, ruffles for dress-up.  Mel’s new task is to try to bring more Flounce to Millicent’s.  In the meantime, we have it in 5 colors.  We are making up samples in all 5 colors so you can see the color effect in each.  You will love it!
