BETH BROWN-REINSEL WORKSHOP,  JAN. 21 and 22, 2005

The long anticipated workshop on Gansey Sweaters to be offered by nationally-renowned knitting teacher and historian Beth Brown-Reinsel is upon us!  For this workshop, we will be CLOSED TO CUSTOMERS  Friday Evening, January 21 and  ALL DAY  Saturday, Jan 22, so that the workshop can go uninterrupted.   Letters with details will go out to workshop participants shortly after the New Year (don’t want them to get lost in all the holiday frenzy!!).

KNIT-ALONG 2005

Our Knit-Along for 2005 will be a follow-up from the Gansey Workshop.  Join us on January 29 as we venture forth on our adult-sized Gansey Sweaters, complete with cables and stitch patterns, traditionally constructed shoulders and gussets and welts – the whole she-bang!! Patterns are available in Beth’s book entitled Gansey Sweaters, and I have several modernized Gansey patterns available as well.

What is a Knit-Along?  It is a four-month long support group for those of us who struggle with completing large projects (you’ll know if you are that kind of person if you look at your stash and see lots of yarn for sweaters and afghans that haven’t gotten past the ribbing!)  We meet once a month to compare notes, encourage one another, and generally have a good time.

The Gansey Knit-Along will take place on Saturdays from 2 to closing on Saturdays, January 29,  February 26, March 26, and April 23.  We ask that you purchase your yarns and supplies at Millicent’s.  The Knit-Along fee is only $2.00 per meeting.  Join us – we have a lot of fun.

P.S.  For those of you last year who explored this idea with us, you’ll recognize that we were a little enthusiastic in projecting three Knit-Alongs per year.  We will focus on just one project per year from now on!

JANUARY CLASSES

Our classes will now be listed on their own page on our website.  We have several new classes, including knitting Kilt Socks and knitting Beaded Mini-Pendant Bags on 0000 needles.  There will also FOUR beginner classes!  Most classes start the first week in January, so don’t miss out!

APRIL PURSE AND BAG SHOW

The Four A’s Arts Alliance and the 60 N. Centre Gallery are sponsoring an exhibit of handcrafted purses and bags in April 2005.  The bags can be made of any material, so we ought to see a wondrous display of wooden, metal, and paper bags.  There is lots of room, however, for knitted, crocheted and felted bagsWe have many patterns and pattern books that highlight fiber-crafted bags.  We will also be offering an entire month of bag classes in February.  So let your imagination begin to ponder this challenge.  It will be fun!

PLEASE NOTE:  The 60 N. Centre Gallery survives by the sale of its displayed items.  If you plan to show any of your work, please be prepared to price it for sale.  Thanks!

ANOTHER DESIGN CHALLENGE – SCARVES

Vogue Knitting and Crafter’s Choice are sponsoring a Designer Scarf Contest.  Contest parameters include 1) creating an original (i.e. previously unpublished) design in knitting, crochet, or mixed medium, 2) incorporating the color pink in some way.  You may experiment with stitches, patterns, motifs at will, but your scarf needs to have the color pink in it.  Scarves will be judged on workmanship and visual appearance.

Send finished scarves to Crafter’s Choice/Vogue Knitting Designer Scarf Contest, 1271 Avenue of the Americas, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10020.  Pin an envelope to your scarf that includes directions for your design as well as labels from the yarns you’ve used along with your name and address.   Contest entries must be postmarked by April 15, 2005.

All proceeds from the contest will be donated to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.

STORE  POLICY

Millicent’s has grown up enough to have its very own store policy.  You’ll find it on our webpage entitled “About Us.”  Please note that the policy included the following:

Purchased needles are non-returnable.

Yarns that have been used, started, experimented with are non-returnable.

Patterns and books are non-returnable.

Why, you many ask?  Although I know that Millicent’s customers are all good souls, our industry is plagued by those few who purchase needles and then return them after a project is finished, who try out yarns and find they don’t like them and then tuck them nicely into the ball and return them as unused, or who purchase patterns and book and then copy what they want and return the items to the store.  Not good practices.  So, to protect Millicent’s from the unscrupulous customer of the future, we are setting these policies in writing.

Of course, we also have good policies:

Please purchase an extra one or two balls of yarn for your project so that you have the dye-lots you need.  If you don’t use them, they can be returned for store credit!

We at Millicent’s wish you a very warm holiday season and thank you for your being part of our growing community of knitters!
