NEWS FLASH ! ! !   WE ARE MOVING! ! !

Not to fear – we aren’t moving far.  In fact we are just moving four doors closer to Baltimore Street to 27 N. Centre Street in a building that has been newly renovated and is beautiful!  For those of you who know Cumberland well, we are going into the building that has housed Ankeney’s office supply store for many decades.

Our new space will be twice as large as our current space but configured very differently.  Think l-o-o-o-ong and skin-n-n-n-ny!  We’ll be able to expand our shelving so that yarns can be seen in all their glory!  We’ll have space for you to sit at tables or at comfortable chairs to do your knitting.  We’ll have many sweaters and bags and shawls and scarves and hats and mittens on display to inspire you -- all where you can see them!  We’ll have room for workshops.  We’ll begin to introduce new inventory for you to expand on your creativity – beads, spinning wheels and roving, needlework kits, weaving.  We are very excited and hope that you will be too.

Of course we will be sad to leave the space where Millicent’s has been located for the last three and a half years.  It has been a warm and friendly space.  To the people who are looking at it for new retail possibilities, I am quick to let them know that 49 N. Centre Street has “positive vibes” because a lot of good things and a lot of fun have been going on there for the last several years.

And so it will be at our new space at 27 N. Centre Street.  We will make sure that it has the same friendly and positive environment that you have come to know and expect from Millicent’s.  We will continue to welcome you warmly and we will be happy to help you to enjoy knitting, tatting, crocheting or spinning, weaving and needlefelting, or whatever your choice of fiber arts is!

NAME CHANGE

In order to help our shop name fit with our expanded ideas, we are changing it to Millicent’s Yarns & More.  Thanks to Avalon Folmsbee who took up the challenge of finding a simple enough name that would be both familiar and let everyone know that there is much to see and do at our new shop.

MOVING DAYS

We will be moving yarns and bins Monday, August 22 through Saturday, August 27.

If you can spare us a morning or afternoon during that week, or an evening on the Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, or even a half hour, we will be so grateful.  We will have a lot of schlepping to do!!!

What can you do to help?  Put together bins for the three new storage areas, bag up yarns that need bagging, reconfiguring bins at the new store with me, stocking the yarns in their new places in the shop, washing the floor! Cleaning up 49 N. Centre Street.  Taking down wires, nails, hooks and more from 49 N. Centre Street. And more – I’m sure there is more!  You can call to say when you are coming, but truthfully you can simply drop in from any time from today to the 27th.  There is plenty to do!

Needless to say, we will be closed during the week of August 22 to August 30.

You would be perfectly sane to wonder why we just don’t just hire a mover.  Well, we did try – really we did!  They seem to be willing to move the normal things (boxes, chairs, tables, even the counter).  But they took one look at the yarns and the bins and did a double-take.  “I don’t think so” was the clear expression on all their faces.  So, that leaves us (however we want to define “us”) to haul a lot of stuff down the street.  After talking to various yarn shops around the country who have made similar moves, we have decided to break the bins down into reasonable sizes, shrink wrap them, and move them, yarn and all, down the street!

I will hard at work from now through the 27. Just drop in!  Starting today, there is a lot to do!

NEW HOURS
Millicent’s Yarns & More will be open from 2 to 5pm on Sundays, 10am to 7 pm on Tuesdays, 10 am to 9pm on Wednesdays, and10am to 5 pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  We will be closed Mondays.

Knit-Out & Crochet Cumberland

and Winter Scarf Contest

Have you ever thought that you were one of only a few knitters in our area?  Well, we would like to show you just how many people are celebrating the wonders of this art/craft form during Cumberland’s Knit-Out, Saturday, October 22 between 11:00 noon and 4:00 pm.

Many cities around the country have Knit-Outs in October.  These are gatherings of knitters who teach new folk to knit, and enjoy being part of a large group of knitters having fun!   The Maryland Eastern Shore Knit Out is early October.  The Washington one is late in October.  Washington is also sponsoring a scarf-making contest, contributing all entries to D.C. homeless shelters after determining the winners.  It’s a great idea worth imitating!

Our Winter Scarf Contest will be the focus of our Cumberland Knit-Out & Crochet as well.  Ours, however, will involve selling your beautifully knitted scarves to the public to raise money for the Cumberland Food Bank.

Here are the contest rules:

1)      The contest is open to all knitters and crocheters of any age group.

2)      Knit or crochet a winter scarf that is at least 6 inches wide and 60 inches (5 feet) long.

3)      All yarn for your project must be purchased at Millicent’s Yarns & More.

4)      The more original you can be, the better.  Try knitting with a new stitch pattern, create your own sampler scarf, combine yarns to create interesting textures, experiment with mosaic knitting, or entralace, or lace!

5)      Scarves must be submitted to Millicent’s Yarns & More at 27 N. Centre Street no later than October 15.

6)      The decision of the judges will be final.

7)      Prizes are awarded as presented and cannot be redeemed for cash.

8)      Scarves must be labeled with your name, address, telephone number and age group by decade (i.e. under 10, 10 – 20, etc).

The scarves will be judged by an impartial judge (i.e. not me) to determine first, second, and third prizes, and one honorable mentions as well as a prize for the best scarf knit by a child under 12 and a prize for a student ages 13 – 22.   Judging will be based upon three criteria:  worthiness in craft (i.e. excellence in execution and neatness in finishing work), originality of design, and design impact.  Winners will be announced at 12:00 noon at Towne Centre in Cumberland.  All scarves submitted to the contest will be put up for sale in downtown Cumberland on Saturday, October 22, from 12:00 (after the announcement of winners) to 4:00.

Prizes:

First prize will receive a three free knitting or crocheting books, a $40.00 gift certificate to Millicent’s to be spent on any item in the shop, and a gift certificate up to $45 toward any class at Millicent’s Yarns & More.

WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT #2

To help you with ideas for the Scarf Style contest, we will hold a Knitting Beautiful Scarves workshop on Saturday, September 17 at 1:00 to 2:30 pm.  We will discuss design sources, combining textures and colors, and gauge (or how to get that 6 inch width no matter what thickness of yarn you start with).  The workshop fee is $10.00.   Please register ahead by calling 301-722-8100.

WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT #3

Many of you met or saw the work of Karen Phillips-Shwallon at the Schoolhouse Quilters Annual Quilt Show this summer.  Her work is a marvelous blend of ribbon and yarn embroidery and woven stitches and her speciality is creating pictures in this way of baskets and flowers.  I was so enamored of her work and she was so enamored of Millicent’s selections of yarns that we decided upon a workshop just for Millicent’s customers:  Millicent’s Magnificent Flower Basket.

Karen will be teaching the fine skills of embroidering with ribbon and yarns at a Millicent’s Yarns & More on Saturday, October 29 from 10am to 3pm.  The cost of the workshop is $45, plus a pattern fee of $12 and an additional fee for materials (not more than $20.  Karen’s finished work will be on display at Millicent’s for several weeks before the workshop.

Karen is close enough to come for repeated visits and is quite excited about the prospects of doing a series of classes for Millicent’s customers.  We are excited too.
